Molopo has embarked on a 2 year project funded by Coal India Limited (CIL) relating to the production and utilization of methane gas from CIL's coal mining leases in Raniganj and Jharia Basins, eastern India.

Molopo will execute the project in association with the Central Institute of Coal Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), Dhanbad. The work will include assessment of gas in closed mines, typically known as Abandoned Mine Methane , and gas associated with active and projected mining areas referred to as Coal Mine Methane.

The project will initially focus on the evaluation of existing gas and geological data to identify and rank gas-rich areas associated with existing or planned underground mine development. Further work will consist of exploration data gathering, culminating in drilling and production trials of gas drainage methods. Assessment of gathering and utilisation options for the gas will be undertaken as part of these studies.
